Badge Labs are fun, inspiring workshops tailored to spark new understandings, outcomes and connections with & for you & your stakeholders.
Purpose-driven badgemaking workshops can help develop fresh insights into challenges and problems and make stronger connections within and beyond your organisation.
Unlike many workshop formats, they’re actually fun, absorbing and refreshing.
By working socially and creatively, and enabling unexpected connections, Badge Labs can help with…
- Working through your ogranisation’s specific challenges or problems
- Catalysing breakthroughs in your creative or artistic process
- Activating your archival holdings and making educational subjects feel vital and personal
- Refreshing and refocusing grassroots community projects
- Teambuilding in playful, absorbing and enriching ways.
Badge Labs draw on the conceptual framework of homemade mutant hope machines – a pragmatic utopian approach to making better worlds developed by Badge Cafe’s own Dr Ben Walters aka Dr Duckie.
These ideas derive from Ben’s academic research with Duckie, the pioneering community-based performance collective. They’ve been published in numerous peer-reviewed books and journals and presented at universities and conferences internationally.
Ben has provided workshops for Live Art Development Agency, Folkestone Fringe, HIV Prevention England and others.

“Overt existential joy”
“Badge Cafe was such a wholesome part of the day! A perfect way for friends and strangers to chill out and make something really personal. Particularly during a busy event, it was brilliant to have Badge Cafe for folks to chill a bit!”
Fraser Buchanan, Raze Collective, organiser of networking event for LGBTQ+ performers
