When people cut circles out of books and magazines to make badges, the resulting holes reveal the pages below. This creates thousands of new visual and thematic juxtapositions.
Since Badge Cafe’s early days, the project’s creator Ben Walters has been preserving, as found, a small fraction of these that he finds particularly striking.
“I love the stories these pieces tell,” Ben says. “Publications planned and produced – consumed and discarded – retrieved and reused – reframed and offered again.
“And the questions they invite. What’s missing? Who took it? Why? What does this absence reveal?
“To me, they are archives of desire. Encounters across space and time. Full holes.”
Now Ben is working with curator Davy Pittoors to make some of these available for sale as original artworks.
Davy platforms a range of queer artists online and through a range of events. These include Queeriosities art and makers fair, where Ben has presented his own badges and collages since 2023.
